Hills and Valleys

Western painters painted outside, looking at nature, but Asian painters painted in their rooms. They painted big mountains and water (rivers and valleys) where they had never been, but they painted them by imagination after experiencing various other nature. Asian painters wanted to project the artist's soul state, morality, and attitude through the expression of nature in their painting rather than the purpose of describing nature. They described this as "胸中丘壑" which means "hills and valleys in their hearts."
In this work, a system with machine-learning technology trained with various landscape paintings from the Joseon Dynasty makes a square landscape image. And it creates image after image like a chain, becoming an endless landscape of nowhere. I wanted that machine to do the same thing as the painters who painted hills and valleys in their hearts.
